+ Is wooden cutlery food-safe?

Yes, as long it the wood is sealed using a natural oil (or no sealant at all) and is washed and dried regularly, wooden cutlery is a great food-safe and Eco-friendly replacement for metal or plastic cutlery.

 

+ What about bacteria?

Acacia wood has naturally occurring anti-bacterial and anti-fungal oil which remain in the wood long after it is harvested. This means that bacteria and other microbes cannot penetrate the wood itself.

As long as you wash and dry your cutlery after use (as with all cutlery), they will not harbour any harmful bacteria or microbes.

Washing:

While your wooden cutlery set is dishwasher & microwave-safe on low heat settings, for longevity, we recommend washing and drying by hand whenever possible.

Resealing:

  • When it comes to food safety, you actually need to consider the sealant used, more than the wood itself.

Washing:

  • Hand wash & dry when possible.
  • Use dishwasher for wood only occasionally and if really needed, use the lowest heat/time settings.

Resealing:

  • You can reseal your wooden plates with a food-safe wood sealant about once a year, depending on use (but it's not mandatory).
  • It's easy to make at home (guide here) or buy a food-safe wood sealant in most hardware stores.
